June 4th 2017 - Tour du Lakes
Everyone has heard of the Fred Whitton Challenge Sportive and numerous other rides tackling the Lake District's many road passes, but how about trying a new, anti-clockwise 207 kilometre Tour Du Lakes route in our June 4th Audax?
The ride starts at 8am and cuts off at 9.48pm from Kendal Rugby Club (hopefully the club's new complex if it's ready by then) with free parking, tea and toilets, and offers spectacular views of the Lakeland scenery while avoiding all major passes.
You head north to Penrith, before skirting the Northern fells to Cockermouth. Then, in the afternoon you pedal past the Western fells and into the beautiful Duddon Valley before looping round the Cartmel Peninsula. There are "refuelling" cafes at Penrith, Cockermouth, Santon Bridge, Broughton-in-Furness and Grange-over-Sands, plus food at the finish.
We will use controls at Newton Rigg (Penrith), Cockermouth, plus one information control. And as this is an Audax UK event the speed limits are strictly between 15k and 30kph (9mph to 18mph average) - it is not a race.
How much? AUK members pay £5 and non-members £7 to cover temporary, on the day, membership. Go to http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/17-489/ if you want to look at our route and enter.
