Club Champs 25 moving to August
England football team’s World Cup success has forced us to move our own goalposts too. Next Wednesday’s planned club championship and Wilson Memorial H’cap 25 will now be just a club 10 on the Levens course as it clashes with the world cup semi-final (and England playing if they beat Sweden today). We have submitted police forms to now hold our 25 on our club event version of the Levens course (finishing up the Lyth Valley) on Sunday, August 5th, starting at 8am and, hopefully, using the Gilpin Bridge Inn as our event HQ. Night closures for A590 roadworks mean that our planned Levens 10 on July 18th will now be switched to the Milnthorpe course, starting at 7pm.
Great Dun day
More immediately, tomorrow’s club audax ride from Kendal Rugby Club, is 160k (100 miles) and features the 2,000ft climb and descent of Great Dun Fell – the highest metalled road in England. You can register at the club (£3 for a brevet card – if we attract more than 15 riders some will have to share) from 7.30am for an 8am roll out. Audax regs apply so you can’t average more than 30kph or less than 15kph (9mph in old money) so most of us should get back between 3pm and 5pm. We should have ridden this last weekend but we decided 30C was just too hot. Tomorrow’s forecast is for something a little cooler but sun cream is still recommended.
Top three finish
Kent Valley RC finished 3rd overall in this year’s Lakes & Lancs Spoco (sporting courses) competition. Pendle Forest won the 24-event series with 2,664 points ahead of Horwich on 2,596. We amassed 2,175 pts to finish ahead of the likes of Border City Whs, Barrow CW and Preston Wheelers. Thirty-eight North West clubs and teams took part and, individually, Peter Knott was second in the M70+ category, Duncan Orme 5th in the M40 (17th overall), Tim Bennett was 6th in the M50s and Richard Belk 6th in the M60s.
Looking ahead, Tony Dixon is reminding everyone that the Giant Shop/KVRC Winter Lanequest series starts on September 2nd with an event from The Tap, Kendal. There will be six events as usual so anyone who would like to organise one should please let Tony know as soon as possible. The other dates (all Sundays) will be: Oct 7th; Nov 4th, Dec 2nd then in 2019 – Feb 3rd and March 3rd.
Winter, of course, will mean a return to covering up yet making sure we are visible to other road-users as nights grow longer. Provizsports do a super line of luminous silver cycling jackets and they are offering KVRC members a 15% discount when they shop at www.provizsports.com. Take a look and quote discount code KVRC 15 if you decide to make a purchase.
And last but not least, Andrew Tanner and myself still have 90th anniversary club jerseys for sale at £25 each. One of us will be there with jerseys at club time trials so just ask if you haven’t already seen one. We want as many members as possible wearing them on our anniversary club runs on August 12th. And don’t forget our 90th anniversary awards night dinner at Kendal Rugby Club on Friday, November 9th. Tickets for that will be going on sale soon.
