October 10th 2018 - October newsletter
Tickets for our 90th Anniversary Awards Night at Kendal Rugby Club on Friday November 9th are now on sale. You get a three-course meal for £20 and the menu is attached below. We have a choice of starter, main course and sweet course as shown in the attached and I’ve numbered each one. So if you’ve already booked tickets please let me know who is having what numbers, and if you haven’t then please do get in touch ASAP with your menu choices. I am emailing award-winners who haven’t already booked tickets because we need you there so we can celebrate your achievements with you.
Our Guest speaker
Our 90th Anniversary Dinner guest speaker is Professor Phil Leigh who now lectures at the University of Hull. Phil’s links with the Kent Valley go back 45 years and he promises to take everyone on a colourful journey populated by club characters past and present. Phil has been a director of North West Division racing teams, an event organiser, professional racing team director, coach and mentor, and was involved in the running of this year Tour of Britain. He represented GB himself in 1990 and is still holder of the Kent Valley RC 24-hour record with a distance of 461.57mls set in 1995.
Music and Nostalgia Corner
Phil Hull (still a double two-up time trial club record-holder) and his seven-piece ukelele band are providing a musical backdrop to our Awards Dinner. And we are also setting up a Nostalgia Corner for everyone to bring along any old club memorabilia to “share” on the night. It’s not just scrapbooks and old event programmes we want you to bring along anything that stirs memories. I did hear of someone bringing a bottle of Gianni Berton’s specially labelled Porthole Grand Prix wine and I am bringing the 2002 result board from the Booths Grand Prix that succeeded Gianni’s event – amazing what you find behind your wardrobe! So see what you’ve got and bring it along on the night.
2018 events still to ride
Apart from our two weekly club runs we still have two more Lanequests before Christmas (I’m just sorting a course for next one on November 4th from Gilpin Bridge Inn), our real annual heavyweight event – the Freewheel Contest from Old Town to Kirkby Lonsdale (Nov 18th); and our Christmas 10 (fancy dress optional) time trial on December 16th.
And looking further ahead into the New Year our committee is already preparing for a third open road race (an all categories handicap), more two-up club 10s, a 3-up club 25, some road bike time trials and helping put on a new sportive in Kendal. KVRC’s 2019 events calendar will be ready early in January.
