July 8th 2017 - club update

Hello All, here is our news catch-up for July.....

Club Champs/Handicap 25

Next Wednesday (July 12th) is our KVRC championship 25, and also the John Wilson Memorial 25, on our club event version of the Levens 25.

So if you want to compete for our championship, fancy your chances in the handicap or simply want to see how fast you can ride a 25, then please let me know by Monday evening, and give me your fastest 10 time (Milnthorpe or Levens) so far this year. Handicaps will be based on those times – no time, no handicap. All awards are, of course, restricted to first claim KVRC members only.

Event HQ for signing on (from 6.30pm), body numbers and a free snack afterwards will be the Gilpin Bridge Inn and its car park. Please note that the start is from the Levens 10s start on Levens Brow (allow 15mins to pedal up there), and the finish is 1.7 miles up the Lyth Valley Road after leaving the A590 at Gilpin Bridge on your second lap!

We can’t run the 25 without volunteers. So far we have a pusher-off, a timekeeper’s spotter, marshals for Lindale RAB, the sliproad from Levens Bridge and the left turn up the Lyth Valley, but we only have one volunteer for the Meathop RAB so we need one more volunteer there and two for Brettargh Holt RAB – three more volunteers please!

Charity donations

Our Midsummer Levens 10 and Edwin Howson Memorial 25 were in aid charity and, now all costs and levies have been paid, KVRC treasurer Tim Bennett has announced that we are donating £635 to CancerCare and £435 to North West Air Ambulance from this year’s events. Well done to all who rode or volunteered their time to marshal or help.

3CC Kendal Sportive

The 3CC Kendal Sportive is our joint promotion with Kendal Rotary Club in aid of their Young Athletes Fund, which supports aspiring young sportsmen and women from the Kendal area with coaching and travel costs. It takes place this year on Sunday, August 13th, using a new, challenging 100k route from Kendal Rugby Club that tackles Grayrigg Hause and Orton Scar en route to Pooley Bridge (Check and feedstop) before tracking along Ullwater and back over Kirkstone Pass and through Troutbeck and Staveley. The scenery is truly stunning and the cumulative climbing tops 5,000ft. We are offering a gold certificate for faster than 15mph returns, silver for 14mph and bronze for all who complete the ride. And all for £20 (all proceeds to Rotary’s fund). Go to to enter online and for more details.

Sedbergh Audax

We had 15 riders in our 100k audax ride over Buttertubs and Tan Hill from the Sedbergh Cyclefest. Our next club audax will be on August 6th and Bruce Barnes is planning to make it 160k (100 miles) .

Thanks to our coast road trio

George Wharton, John Roberts and Nigel Hooker kept our flag flying in Barrow Central Wheelers’ Coast Road 21 last week – a counting event in the season-long Tunstall Trophy hillies series. The next scoring event is our own Jungle Café hilly on Monday, July 24th. Let’s get plenty of riders out if we can.
